Hails, Trond!

I heard The Third and the Mortal for the first time about a year ago, when I was completely into Elend. My friend advised me to check you out and I must say that I was very impressed by what I heard: the most deep and diverse sound; voice that creeps into your soul. It is absolutely wonderful.

So, what is your muse, your inspiration for that unearthly depth?

We have all the way since the beginning in 1992 tried to capture a unique sound. The idea behind the band was that it t was not to have any musikal bounderies what so ever, in a process of creating songs and different soundscapes. In the beginning every person involved had their own musikal expression and found inspiration in many different kinds of music across genres.
As the band proceed we found inspiration, and took impulses from other people and instrumentations in order to get our expression further. It was important for us to develop both the bands sound, and the individual scills from album to album.

Was it hard to find people who support you in terms of music and spirituality?

Not really, when our first album came out in 93 we where one of the first band that had mixed fe-male vocals with this sound, so our first fan-base was grewing rapidly. This was also in the beginning of the norwegian black – metal area, but instead of going that way, we took our own path.

Who, from The Third and the Mortal has music education?

In the current line-up : Trond Engum , Rune Hoemsnes, Kirsti Huke, Andreas Elvenes and Sander Olsen.

What is the essence of your art, and the meaning of your lyrics?

The main meaning behind the band is because we love music and have a great time playing it. So the essence of our art is a reflection of several people cooperating in making music, adding their own flavours in order to get it as a whole. The lyrics are mirrors that reflect the music.

Could you please characterise your own style?

I think it is a bit hard to characterise our music for several reasons. First of all since our music style has changed a lot since the beginning. Also in the making process we have no bounderies in style, genre or instrumentation. The most important thing is that we find pleasure in the expression and it takes us further from album to album.

Who is responsible for creating music and texts?

Since the beginning we have had some changes in the line up, but the main foundation is still there. (Rune, Trond, Geir and Finn-Olav). These are the people responsible for the creations. Anyway all the musicians in the line up are equal in their importance for the band.

Please, describe the routine of writing a song.

It changes all the time, but mainly there are one person with an idea, and we work out the idea together. But it could also be developed great thing through improvisation amongst the members.

The Third And The Mortal – what does your band’s name represent, mean?

We started to write a song many years ago, called The 3rd ad The Mortal. The song was never finished, but we liked the name, and took it as our band name.

Are you being influenced by any kind of literature? Is it reflected in the creativity of the band as such?

Of course it is impossible not to be influenced by any kind of literature. Anyway it is not a theme for discussion inside the band in how to use such impulses in the creative process. I think it is more the different persons taking their inputs into the band as a whole.

Please tell the readers about the music material in general. What is ready, what has been released and what should a potential listener expect from The Third and the Mortal?

One of the main philosophies with our music is not to release the same album twice, and always try to take the expression further.

Do you often play live? Which of your concerts do you remember most and why?

We don`t tour as often as we used to, but we still go out. One of the concerts I remember most was a gig we did in Mexico city. Always fun to travel outside your own country to make new experiences.

What do you prefer: to play in your own country or abroad? Why ?

We prefer to play abroad, mostly because of the travel distances. In Norway it is very far from town to town, so we like more to experience new places rather than our own band bus.

What was the biggest problem that you had to solve in the history of the band?

The biggest problem with a band, and all bands, is always to change someone in the line up. You never know what you loose or what you gain

What other stuff do you do besides music? Hobbies? Interests?

Most of my time is dedicated to music, but --- Movies, reading, nature are great sources for inspiration. Also enjoy playing football.

What instrument do you use for writing music?

It differs from time to time, but guitar – drums – vocals- recorder(To make own samples), Strings(Cello, violin…) and so on.
